Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes is often quoted as saying that "Taxes are what we pay for a civilized society."
That being said, we as citizens are under no obligation to pay more taxes than we need to. There is a difference between tax evasion, which is illegally avoiding your tax obligations, and tax avoidance, which is simply taking advantage of all the deductions to which you're legally entitled.
